Appts. for preparing samples of radioactive liquid for analysis inside a closed chamber comprises two hollow needles (14, 15) carried by a plate (3) which is vertically movable by one pneumatic ram (4), and a trolley (2) carrying two cups (11, 13) designed to accommodate respective sample flasks (16, 17) with rubber caps (18), and a central cup (12) for washing the needle. The trolley (2) is horizontally movable by a second ram (5) to align each cup in turn with the needles. When plate (3) is lowered, both needles can penetrate a rubber cap (18), after which long needle (14) transfers and delivers liquid while short needle (15) allows air to be displaced. In use, flask (16) initially contains a liquid for analysis, and flask (17) is empty. Needle (14) partly fills flask (17) with diluent liquid from an external source and itself remains full of diluent while it is raised, lowered into cup (12) and there washed and dried by water and air directed downwards from sprays (21). The needles are raised and lowered into flask (16) where a small sample of liquid is drawn into needle (14) followed by an air bubble. The needles are again washed and dried in cup (12) then transferred to flask (17) into which is injected the sample followed by more diluent. Flask (17) then contains a sample of the original liquid diluted to a known degree and is removed from the trolley and transferred to analysis plant.
