The long-wheelbase vehicle has controllable front steering wheels and automatically-controlled rear ones, so as to give the same travel and steering characteristics as a vehicle of the same length but with a shorter wheelbase and non-steering rear wheels. It is of modular construction, with a front module (2) with the controllable steering wheels, a rear one with steering wheels and power unit, and a payload module (4) joining them firmly together. The overhang beyond the front and rear wheels is minimal. When halted or travelling at low speed, the rear wheels can be manually controlled and lockable in the straight position. The rear-wheel steering gear can be arranged automatically to counteract the effect of side winds etc.
