A procedure for reversing the direction of a brushless DC motor uses a single quadrant controller with reversible direction. After the reversal, the motor is automatically short-circuited, the motor speed is tested and then the short circuit is removed if the speed is almost zero. A speed sensor is coupled to the motor whose output goes to a voltage converter and then to the speed controller. In the output of the converter is a comparator feeding an electronic changeover switch. This is connected with the output of a flank detector.
