A centrifugal compressor is provided with a collector (11) for receiving refrigerant from the diffuser, and sound absorbent segments (22) are placed within the collector (11) and retained in place against one wall (29) thereof. One method of retention is by way of a ring (32) and a plurality of spring clip members (31). The silencer segments (22) and the retaining ring (32) and spring clip members (31) are placed into the collector (11) prior to installation of the diffuser. As the diffuser is attached to the collector (11), one edge engages a side of the ring (32) so as to axially move it into its final fixed position, while at the same time causing the attached spring clip members (31) to be placed in tension against the silencer segments (22) to secure them in place.
