Glycolic acid (HOCH2COOH) is prepared by reacting formaldehyde (HCHO) and carbon monoxide (CO) in the presence of water or water-methanol mixture using heterogeneous solid catalyst, which is polymeric strong acid catalyst ion-exchanged by 5-40wt% with monovalent metal of IB in a water-soluble inert solvent. For reactant formaldehyde is used the unrefined fromaldehyde containing water or water-unreacted methanol. Water-soluble inert solvent used is dioxane.
