Method for preparing an octa-2,7-dien-1-ol, wherein 1,3-butadiene is subjected to a hydrodimerization reaction with water in the presence of a transition metal, in the form of a metal or a compound thereof, a tertiary or quaternary water soluble phosphorus compound, and at least one nitrogen compound, characterized in that the nitrogen compound is selected from a tertiary amine, a quaternary ammonium salt and a tertiary diamine, of formulae (I), (II) or (III), wherein Rp, Rq, Rr, Rs stand for C1-C4 alkyl, and Rr may comprise up to 22 carbon atoms; X<-> is HCO3<->, CO3<2->, HSO3<->, SO3<2->, SiO3<2->, PO4<3->, HPO3<2->, ASO4<3->, SO4<2->, HSO4<->, RSO3<->, RCO2<-> or OH<->, R is alkyl; Rs, Rt, Ru, Rv are C1-C22 alkyl; and n is an integer of 2-12. Said reaction is conducted in the presence of at least one surfactant selected among non-ionic, zwitterionic or amphoteric and anionic surfactants and in the presence of carbon dioxide, without the addition of a water miscible or partially water miscible solvent. |
