PURPOSE:To provide a backlight such as a liquid crystal display panel excellent in luminance uniformity by lessening luminance dispersion right over both ends of a fluorescent lamp. CONSTITUTION:An electrode at a first end 6a where film thickness is large of fluorescent coat 9 on the inner face of a glass tube 8, of a fluorescent lamp 6 which is stored in a flat lamp house 5 formed with a reflecting plate 1 and a diffusing plate 3 is connected to the output terminal 12L on the low voltage side of an invertor circuit 11, while an electrode at a second end 6b where film thickness is small is connected to the output terminal 12H on the high voltage side of the invertor circuit 11. When the fluorescent lamp 6 is lit via the invertor circuit 11, the brightness of the first end 6a which decreases with the application of low voltage is compensated by increasing with the emission of the fluorescent coat 9 having a more thickness. On the contrary, the luminance of the second end 6b which decreases with the emission of the fluorescent coat 9 having a less luminance is compensated by increasing with the application of high voltage. The brightnesses of both ends 6a, 6b of the fluorescent lamp 6 are well-balanced to improve luminance uniformity on the diffusing plate 3. |
