A mixing assembly consists of a base (1) within which an assembly generates a rotating magnetic field which extends to within the contents of a non-magnetic vessel (6) resting upon the base. A magnetic mixer paddle (8) within the vessel (6) is rotated by the magnetic field below. The novelty is that the magnetic mixer paddle (8) incorporates a flat disc or plate (8; 16,17) which is magnetised vertically with respect to the plane of the disc or plate. The disc or plate is made of samarium-cobalt or neodymium-boron.
