The method and apparatus provide control of an adjustment unit (12), such as a throttle flap of an IC engine or a fuel injection pump, the latter in the case of a diesel engine, in a vehicle. A target adjustment value for the unit (12) is provided and by electric actuation, the adjustment unit (12) is adjusted by means of a stepper motor (16). Fine adjustment of the stepper motor (12) is carried out by varying the current flowing through the coils of the stepper motor (16).The current is set such that the torque generated by the stepper motor (12) is dependent on the operating condition of the vehicle or its drive unit.
