In order to condition continuously and reliably the air in containers in which heat is liberated, the invention proposes a method using at least two independent air-conditioning units connected to each other by a data line with a control system. The method is characterized in that, at any given time, at least one unit is not in operation and the total rating of the maximum number of units in operation is sufficient to condition the air in the space under any conditions. At periodic intervals, the units not in operation are started up and the same number of operating units shut down. Maintenance work can therefore be carried out on the units not in operation, without interrupting the continuous conditioning of the air in the container. The invention also proposes an air-conditioning unit for carrying out the method. The unit has all its components located in a single housing (1) and is characterized in that the condenser (2) is located on the aspiration side of at least two open-running radial-flow fans (3, 4) fitted in the housing (1), as well as in that the whole of the housing interior on the delivery side of the fans (3, 4) can be placed under pressure by the fans and the air which has passed through the condenser (2) is blown out of the housing (1) through holes (7) located at any point in the housing wall enclosing the space (6) placed under pressure. This design enables particularly compact and powerful units to be built which take up little space in the container, can be fitted anywhere and are easy to install and replace. In a preferred embodiment, the air-conditioning unit also has an electric heater with which the container can be heated after being installed at low temperatures at which the equipment causing heat to be liberated cannot yet be operated.
