The liquid level of the individual battery cells is monitored with sensors (20). The sensor electric output signals are transmitted to an electronic evaluation unit (28), which activate a pump (34) with the reaching or the failure to reach the min. level of a cell. The pump supplies the individual cells up to the desired fluid level. The system for carrying out the method includes a sensor (20) for producing a signal according to the liquid level, which is connected to the evaluation unit (28). With the reaching of a specified min. level of the liquid (14), the liquid supply is activated or a noticeable signal is produced.
