Housing 1 has an annular collar 4 attached to a vehicle structural member 2, 3 and a stanchion 7 axially movable within the collar. A means, such as an external circlip 12 or locking screw (23, Fig. 2) or internal locking bars (38, Figs. 4, 5) are provided for locking the stanchion to the collar in at least one position relative thereto. A screwjack 15 forming part of the stanchion and terminating in a foot 18 can be extended or retracted by rotation relative to the stanchion to move the foot in order to engage or disengage ground below the vehicle. Foot 18 may be cup-shaped, as shown, or serrated (Fig. 2), in order to grip the ground. A rotatable tube (29, Fig. 2) may be located inside the stanchion to deter thieves from sawing through the jack.
