In an atomic absorption spectrometer (10) for measuring Hg concn. in a sample, the sample cell (14) has /- 2 connectable light transmission chambers (16, 18) with light absorption distances related, pref. in a ratio of 1:9 (for two chambers) or 1:9:90 (for three chambers). Also claimed is a method of calibrating the above spectrometer.
