An appts. for winding an item (8) on to a winding body (10) has a stock spool (7) and a drive appts. by means of which the item, linked to the body, can be drawn off from the spool on to the body. Here the spool axis of rotation is arranged to be parallel to the draw-off direction of the item to be wound and the stock spool is coupled to a spool drive (3) for driving the spool at a rotational speed corresp. to the item doffing speed.
