PURPOSE:To obtain new substances having inhibiting action on thiol protease participated in inflammation, metastasis, tissue damage after cardiac infarction, muscular dystrophy, etc. CONSTITUTION:These new inhibitors are PF1138A substance (R=H) and PF1138B substance (R=OH) of the formula (R is H or OH). These substances are obtained by carrying out shake culture, etc., of a PF1138A substance- producing bacterium and/or a PF1138B substance-producing bacterium belonging to the genus Chaetomium in a medium containing a carbon source such as glucose, a nitrogen source such as soybean powder and as necessary, inorganic salts such as sodium, preferably by deep culturing method, preferably at 20-30 deg.C (especially about 25 deg.C), usually for 2-7 days.
