Natural amino acid derivatives as inhibitors of metal proteinases, process for their preparation, pharmaceutical compositions containing them and use of the said compounds in medicine. This invention relates to therapeutically active hydroxamic acid derivatives, processes for their preparation, pharmaceutical compositions containing them and the use of the said compounds in medicine, specifically compounds of formula (I) in which R2 is an R6-A- group in which A is a saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched divalent hydrocarbon chain having up to 6 C atoms, R3 is a side chain characteristic of a natural alpha amino acid other than proline, R4 is hydrogen or methyl, R5 is hydrogen, or an alkyl or amine group, or R3 and R5, taken together, represent a divalent hydrocarbon chain. These compounds have the property of inhibiting the action of metal proteinases and are useful for the treatment or prophylaxis of conditions which give rise to tissue disintegration. <IMAGE>
