C3 or C4 unsaturated nitriles are made by reacting C3 or C4 olefins, NH3, O2 and steam in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) oxides of Bi and Mo or (ii) bismuth phosphomolybdate or bismuth molybdate on SiO2 having a surface area of 100-500 sq. in./gm., a bulk weight of 20-50 gms./litre and a particle size of 3-50 mm . Examples describe the synthesis of acrylonitrile from propylene and methacrylonitrile from isobutylene. Additionally the catalysts may contain a bismuth salt of phosphormystic acid or tungstic acid. Acetonitrile is obtained as by-product.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises oxides of Mo and Bi supported on SiO2, the SiO2 having a surface area of 100-500 sq.m./gm., a bulk weight of 20-80 gms./litre and a particle size of 2-250 millimicrons. The SiO2 may be produced by thermal decomposition of silicon compounds, e.g. SiCl4. The catalyst may consist of bismuth phosphomolybdate on SiO2. Examples are given. Additionally the catalyst may contain a bismuth salt of phosphotungstic or tungstic acids. |
