The invention comprises organo-aluminium compounds of formula R2AlOM (where R = alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl M = alkali metal, e.g. Na or K). They are made by heating a mixture of an alkyl aluminium hydride and an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably at 100 DEG to 180 DEG C. One embodiment has a dialkyl aluminium hydride dissolved in 1-3 times its volume of an inert organic solvent, e.g. toluene or xylene, together with 10 to 100% excess of caustic soda, the mixture being maintained at the boiling point of the solvent until hydrogen evolution ceases. The dialkyl aluminium hydride may be formed by the action of the heated reaction medium on a trialkyl aluminium compound. These organo-aluminium compounds may be used as activators in the preparation of alkyl aluminium compounds by the reaction of metallic aluminium and hydrogen with olefinic hydrocarbons containing one double bond. In Example 1, a dry toluene solution of bis-(2-methyl-pentyl) aluminium hydride and sodium hydroxide is boiled under reflux under argon for 16 hours and after cooling the solution is filtered to yield the sodium-aluminium compound NaOAl(C6H13)2. In Example 2, tris-(2-methyl pentyl) aluminium is prepared by the reaction of 99.5% pure Al and hydrogen with 2-methylpent-1-ene in toluene solution in the presence of tris-(2-methyl-pentyl) aluminium (as initiator) and NaOAl(C6H13)2 in an autoclave. |
