The device includes recording and reading index information positioned in inter-image spaces. The alphanumeric character height is equal to the difference between the height (1a) of the exposed picture and a step (1b) for advancement of the film. The width (1c) is at least equal to the width of the cinematic images. The alphanumeric characters can juxtapose the code sequence or can be on opposite sides of an inter-image space. The alphanumeric characters can be placed in high or low inter-image spaces for even pictures. For odd pictures, characters are not placed in the inter-image spaces. The characters are inscribed from an alphanumeric display by an objective lens and mirror which focus onto the spacing during exposure in the viewing window.
