A process is claimed for the electrochemical cleaning of the image (6) of a non-coloured daguerreotype plate (5) that includes some surface zones corroded by sulphur, chlorides and silver oxides. This process consists of immersing the plate in an electrolyte (3) and applying an electric voltage between the plate and a counter electrode (15) also immersed in the electrolyte. The electrolyte is chemically neutral to copper and silver. A reference electrode, connected electrically to the daguerreotype plate is inserted between the plate and the counter electrode and an adjustable and continuous electrical voltage is applied between the plate and the counter electrode, in order to cathodically polarise the daguerreotype by maintaining a constant voltage between the plate and the counter electrode for a time that is sufficient to allow the complete or essentially complete elimination of the sulphur, chlorides and silver oxides present on the daguerreotype image. The device used to put this process into service is also claimed. |
