The telephone has the speech signals transmitted to and from the user via a headphone set, with an earpiece at one side and a microphone at the other side, with the selection of the reception and/or transmission mode effected via the earpiece and/or the microphone. Pref. the telephone base station has respective sources, allowing the user to select the normal telephone handpiece, the headphone set, or both.
