IC engine camshaft timing adjustment

The mechanism has coaxial driving and driven members, the latter turning on a spindle. The members are coupled by the rings, which are spaced apart in the axial direction and have internal and external helical teeth, being spring-loaded towards each other to take up backlash. Timing is altered by an annular hydraulic piston containing pins (76) extending through one of the rings as far as the other. Portions (80) of the pins engage resiliently with one of the rings. Compression springs can be mounted between the piston and one ring, preloading it towards the other, and there can be buffer springs on one ring for engagement with the pins. The spring can be of the coil type enclosing the pins.
