The unit has a compact casing (2) containing a motor with an armature (13), gearing (15) with input and output shafts (26,49,71), and a chain drive (14) which is coupled to the output shaft. The input shaft extends coaxially through the drive, and has radial clearance. A slipping clutch (36,39) is arranged between the armature and the input shaft, and the latter has a power operated brake system (16) coupled to it. The shaft can also have more than one component, and can have a section (26) which extends through the armature, and which is then coupled to the armature via the clutch.
