A structural building unit, e.g. a brick, comprises a hollow load-bearing body 13, preferably of rectangular parallelepiped shape, at least one of the faces 12 being transmissive to electromagnetic radiation, preferably light, and the interior of the body being adapted for receiving a radiation-emitting or a radiation-sensitive device. Such building units are preferably shaped and sized similar to conventional house bricks and may be incorporated in walls to provide illumination or security devices; bricks 10 with lights 19 are built into the outer skin of the wall, the electric wiring being situated in the cavity.
