A livestock temperature monitoring system for monitoring the temperature of livestock including at least one animal. For each animal to be monitored, there is provided a temperature monitor and a remote transmitter preferably encapsulated together and fixed to the animal, for example by injection into a body cavity of the animal. The temperature monitor has a first output signal representative of the temperature of the animal, and the remote transmitter transmits upon receipt of the first out signal a second output signal representative of the temperature of the animal being monitored. A central receiver is tuned to the given bandwidth and located within a distance over which signals from each remote transmitter are detectable. The receiver outputs a third signal representative of the temperature of each animal to a central processor to process the third signal output of the receiver and display in human observable form indicia representative of the temperature of at least one animal being monitored. A method of monitoring the temperature of an animal by providing the animal with a temperature monitor and transmitter and transmitting to a central receiver a signal representative of the temperature of the animal. The method may include selectively interrogating the transmitter and causing it to transmit a signal representative of the temperature of the animal. The animal is preferably provided with a temperature monitor and transmitter by injecting the temperature monitor and transmitter into a body cavity of the animal. The method may include generating for transmission a brand signal associated with the animal; and transmitting the brand signal from the transmitter to the central receiver.
