Method for the classification of objects such as furniture and works of art. The method is characterized in that a sequence of images encompassing the classes and subclasses of objects is created, in the form of a tree structure. For each class or subclass of objects so defined, a representational image of the object is formed, illustrating, in general, the generic structural elements of the object and for each element, a number of elementary representational images are created corresponding to the different methods for the production of said elements. The invention is characterized in that said images are stored in a storage device having a tree-like structure for the sequence of images. A given object is classified based on the image in sequence of images stored in said storage device, applicable to the different structural elements of said object, said images having been copied on a suitable image medium. The invention is useful for the identification of stolen or lost objects.
