Discontinuous method for halogenating solid polymeric and metallic materials comprises: (1) filling starting material into a chamber (filled with air at about atmos pressure) which is part of a system or appts. including inlet and outlet, heat exchanger and circulation pump, arranged in series; (2) the chamber and material are heated to a selected temp. between 38 and 93 deg.C by circulating air through the exchanger; (3) evacuating the appts.; (4) introducing halogen at a level of up to 10 wt.% above that required to provide the selected degree of halogenation, so as to provide a partial pressure of 700-21000 Pa absolute; (5) introducing insert gas to total pressure about 1 atmos; (6) maintaining the temp. by circulating halogen/inert gas mixt.; (7) circulating for sufficient time that halogen content falls to below 5% of its initial level; (8) evacuating the vessel, filling with air to about atmos. pressure and recovering halogenated material.
