Electrolytic process to regenerate an Fe-III chloride or Fe-III sulphate soln. (pickling soln.) esp. for spray etching steel, comprises filling the anode chamber of an electrolysis cell, whose anode and cathode chambers are divided by an ion exchange membrane, with the pickling soln. as analyte, and the cathode chamber with the dil. acid as catholyte. At the anode, Fe-II ions are oxidised to Fe-III ions. The novelty is that a cation exchange membrane (16) is used as the membrane, through which Fe-II, Fe-III ion excess and dissolved non-ferrous metals, such as Ni and Cr, are transferred into the cathode chamber (14).
