A machine for inserting a geo-plastic layer 18 beneath a railway track has two unrolling mechanisms 17 for supporting and unrolling supply rolls 19. Each mechanism 17 has a longitudinal roll 24 extending in the longitudinal direction of the machine and an oblique roll 26 arranged at an angle of 45 DEG to said longitudinal roll. Two webs of geo-plastic can therefore be laid on the formation simultaneously, arranged side by side and overlapping in the transverse direction. The dual plastic rolls are lighter than full width rolls, and are therefore easier to handle. Shafts 34 carry spare rolls 19.
