Improvements for reducing the volume of a vehicle containing devices for automatically cleaning and treating bread racks. Firstly, a decrease in height is obtained since the racks (20) are horizontally fed and soaked in a tank (5), the racks (20) which are suspended by a bar (15) and contained in the basket (41), being brought to a horizontal position. The base of said basket is linked to the carriage (30) by a line (42) passing over return pulleys (43, 46 and 47), whereby said basket is caused to rotate at 90 DEG in relation to the vertical during the descent of the elevator carriage (30). Secondly, a reduction in length is obtained by the insertion of several parallel rail sections such as (13A, 13B, 13C) in said steamer (10), the cable (1) being successively brought into the vertical plane of each rail section by the transverse movement of rollers (60, 61) in relation to said steamer. The rollers are in contact with said cable, whose tension is continuously held by the longitudinal movement of pulleys (2 and 3) carrying it.
