Stored erythrocyte suspensions, particularly blood, are preserved by removal or interception of the red corpuscle intracellular metabolic products. Deterioration of the red corpuscle is measured by the degree of lactic acid development. The preserving procedure may involve setting up a high diffusion gradient between the interior of the erythrocytes and a surrounding liquid, e.g. the suspension may be held in a semi-permeable membrane within a saline buffered at pH 7.4 and containing glucose and phosphate. |
