The liquid cooling system for an internal combustion engine (2) fitted to a vehicle includes an internal circuit (12) passing through the engine block, a main liquid/air heat exchanger (4) and a pump (3) circulating the liquid. A further branch of the circuit (14) serves an alternator (9) driven by the engine. This branch draws off some of the liquid leaving the engine block (2) and passes it through the alternator to be returned to the pipe which feeds liquid into the engine block. An auxiliary liquid/air heat exchanger is provided in this branch upstream of the alternator to ensure a supply of cooled liquid to the alternator. The flow in the branch circuit is controlled by a thermostat.
