In the known method of this type, either a continuous-action controller or a two-position controller is provided. In these methods it is difficult, particularly in the lower output range of the appliance, to achieve a good ratio between the control quality and operating frequency of the controller. The combination according to the invention of a continuous-action controller and a two-position controller having a self-tuning operating differential for controlling the supply or return temperature of hot-water heating installations is characterised by as low as possible an operating frequency and the best possible control quality in conjunction with low and high heat requirements. The preferred field of application is gas-heated flow-through water heaters for heating installations.
