PURPOSE:To provide an efficient lighting device with a compact size by utilizing a light guiding plate. CONSTITUTION:A square plate-like light guiding plate 33 is attached to a U-shaped outer frame 14. The outer frame 14 is put in an apparatus main body 12 attached to the ceiling. Cold cathode type fluorescent lamps 16 are put face to face to the upper and lower light input end faces of the light guiding plate 33. The length of the longher side of the outer shape of the frame body 21 of the outer frame 14 is made almost the same as the length of the longer side of the cold cathode type fluorescent lamps 16. The width of both sides of the frame side part 22 is made almost the same as the longitudinal size of the metal cap parts 31, which are light non-emission parts of the cold cathode type fluorescent lamps 16. As a result, guiding light 11 can be made compact. Uniform light emission is carried out only in the part which can be seen out of the light guiding plate 33 and light beams radiated out of the cold cathode type fluorescent lamps 16 are utilized effectively.
