The passenger compartment (12) of the car (10) has the rear section (18) separated longitudinally from the passenger section by the seat backs (16) of the rear seats (14) and defined at the back of the car by the cross wall (22). The upper part of the rear body (28) is mounted so as to pivot on the structure of the car, around the horizontal axis (X-X), between a normal position and a retracted position, in which it is arranged within the rear section (18) of the body. The upper front section (30), forming the roof of the passenger compartment, is linked to the upper rear section, by a linkage mechanism (46), which is formed by a linkage jack (50) and a connecting arm (48). The jack is connected at one end to the roof and at the other end to the upper rear section, by two axes (W-W and Y-Y). The vehicle roof is thus retracted by means of the series of jacks, of which one (58) drives the rear section and the other (60) drives the linkage jack around their respective pivot points (X-X and Y-Y).
