The patent relates to a novel type of reactor for a biological purification (treatment) of a gas stream. In this reactor, the gas stream to be treated is introduced at a specific level, by means of gas distribution system, into a bacterial suspension. A uniform distribution of the gas stream over part of the horizontal cross section of the bacterial suspension may be most beneficial in this context, in connection with the liquid flow necessarily to be generated. The liquid level above the gas distribution system should be such that adequate mass transfer takes place for achieving a particular degree of purification of the gas. Owing to the good mixing, the bacterial suspension below the gas distribution system contributes some activity to the conversion of the transferred components. This allows relatively high gas loads per m2 of reactor cross section to be employed. As a result of good mixing, uniform conditions arise in the liquid phase of the reactor. That is beneficial for bacterial activity and also simplifies monitoring and control of the reactor.
