Mechanical tappet for IC engine cylinder heads

The tappet is arranged in a hole in the cylinder head and has a cup shaped housing. This surrounds a hollow cylinder (1), closed at one end by a base (2), against which a cam acts. Inside the base is an element (3) butting flat against it and which is in contact with the end of a valve. The element is designed with a cylindrical surface, and is held to the inside of a hub (4) fastened to the inside of the base. A pretensioned spring (8,11) is arranged in a slit (7) in the hub, so as to engage under the end surface of the element.
