[Also in Group XXXIX] A magnetic memory array comprises a magnetic material secured to an inert substrate by spaced particles of an inorganic material preferably of the same composition as the magnetic material. The substrate may comprise platinum or palladium or a ceramic such as Mn 2.8 Ti 0.1 Fe 0.1 O 4 and Mn 2.0 Ti 0.1 Al 0.9 O 4 , on which is applied layers of a parting sand in the desired configuration of the array. The parting sand consists of volatile organic constituents and a small percentage, e.g. 1 % or less by weight, of a non-volatile inorganic ferrite material, the sand being applied to the substrate through a suitably masked silk screen. A suitable sand composition is stated to be 2.5 g. carbon black, 1.25 g. ethyl cellulose, 23.75 g. pine oil, 2.0 g. varnish and 0.1 g. Fe 1.68 Mn 1 . 25 Cr 0.06 Ni 0.03 O 4 . The same ferrite material is used for the magnetic storage elements, and is applied in ink form by a silk screen process on to a treated glass slide which has been previously coated with a 2% gelatin-water solution and a solution of 3 grams of ethyl cellulose and 40 grams of pine oil. When dry, the slide is dipped in water to dissolve the gelatine. The pattern thus produced is placed over the parting sand and is initially heated to 500 ‹ C. to drive off the binder constituents. The temperature is then raised to 900‹ C. to burn off the carbon, and final firing takes place at 1400‹ C. for 15 minutes to several hours to complete the process, the ferrite storage elements so formed being bound to the substrate by separate sintered particles of the same material. In a modification, tubular storage elements are formed by positioning the parting sand 2, Fig. 6, and memory element pattern 7 in semi-circular grooves of a substrate 8, and after placing the two substrates in facing alignment, as shown in Fig. 7, the ferrite portions are sintered together by the heating operation.
