The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for machining logs, in which method the log 2 is fed to a work station in which there is a machine 7 for machining a timber item. In order to permit rapid machining of the logs 2 without having to move the log several times from one work station to another, according to the invention peg holes and other holes extending from the upper to the lower surface of the log are machined in the log when the log is fixed in the place it occupies whilst the timbers are being machined. For carrying out the method, according to the invention a unit is used, which comprises timber working machines 7, which are situated in the same working area 6 as the drilling machines 8, 9, 12, 13, 16 for machining the said holes, the distance of the drilling machines from the timber working machines being less than the length of the log 2 that is to be machined. Likewise there is a sawing machine 11 for cleaving guide grooves and a chain saw 14 for chamfer sawing in the working area 6. The functions of the machining line according to the invention, situated in a small, physically limited area, are controlled by a computer program, thereby automating the machining line. <IMAGE>
