A seal for sealing the propshaft (23) of a power boat to its hull is disclosed. An engine is mounted within the hull to drive the propshaft (23). The seal includes a stationary seal housing (21) affixed to the hull and a gland housing (1) within the shaft is supported for rotation. The seal housing (21) and the gland housing (1) are provided with complementary sealing faces (31, 32), the gland housing (1) being fastened to seal housing (21) with a PTFE sealing insert (11) sandwiched between the sealing faces by means of studs (24). The studs (24) are permitted to move within the seal housing (21), thus allowing a degree of movement of the gland housing (1) relative to the seal housing (21) transversely to the axis of the propshaft (23). The propshaft (23) includes an integrally sleeve (3) which rotates within the gland housing (1). Packing rings (7) are compressed between the gland housing (1) and a gland plate (2) to provide a seal between the gland housing (1) and the sleeve (3). The ability of the gland housing (1) to move relative to the seal housing (21) allows torsional stresses occasioned by the hull twisting in reaction to engine torque to be relieved. |
