METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RECOVERING ELEMENTAL SULFUR FROM FLUE GAS

A method and apparatus for recovering elemental sulfur from flue gas are described. Raw flue gas containing sulfur moieties is oxidised, and the resulting sulfur oxides (SOx) containing gas is contacted with moist active carbon particles in the presence of oxygen to form H2SO4. H2SO4 associated with carbon particles is reduced to elemental sulfur by H2S in a reduction step, and the elemental sulfur is recovered. Gas containing unreacted H2S is oxidised with the raw flue gas and/or employed to reduce H2SO4 and/or by-product SO2 in the reduction step. The sole products of the process are desulfurised flue gas and elemental sulfur.
