New pseudoceramides have the formula (I), in which R<1> stands for a residue of a hydroxydicarboxylic acid diester with 3 to 10 carbon atoms in the dicarboxylic acid component and 1 to 30 carbon atoms in the alcohol components, R<2> stands for hydrogen or a possibly hydroxy-substituted alkyl residue with 1 to 30 carbon atoms, R<3> stands for a hydroxyalkyl residue with 2 to 12 carbon atoms and 1 to 10 hydroxyl groups or a glycosyl residue and X stands for a linear or branched alkylene residue with 1 to 6 carbon atoms. These substances are useful as synthetic barrier lipids in skin care products.
