Life jacket inflator using cartridge of compressed gas

The device for inflating life jackets and the like has a piercing portion (23) for puncturing the diaphragm sealing a cartridge of compressed gas. This piercing portion is movable towards the diaphragm by the force of a spring (35) held in a pretension ed position by a retainer (46) which is released when a sensor (73) transmits an electrical signal indicating the presence of water. Pref., the releasing unit (11) contg. the sensor and releasing piece is separate from the housing (10) of the portion including the piercing portion and spring. The action of screwing the cartridge into the bore (19) of the housing can tension the spring.
