<p>Epoxides of formula <FORM:1068973/C2/1> wherein R represents an alkyl group (1-7 C) or an aryl group, R1 represents an alkyl group (1-7 C) and R2 represents a methyl group, are prepared by reacting a linalyl ester <F/2> with perphthalic acid in an aqueous medium. The compounds in which R1 is an alkyl (1-4 C), R2 is absent and R (when present) represents an alkyl group (2-4 C) or an aryl group, or when R1 represents an alkyl (2-4 C), a methyl group, specifically, 3-formoxy-3,7-dimethyl-6,7-epoxy - octene - (1), 3 - isobutoxy - 3,7 - di methyl - 6,7 - epoxy - octene - (1), 3 - iso valeroxy - 3,7 - dimethyl - 6,7 - epoxy - octene - (1), and 3 - acetoxy - 3,7 - dimethyl - 6,7-epoxy - nonene - (1) are claimed. The pre paration of the compounds is exemplified and the products have valuable odour character istics.</p> |
