COMMUNICATION BY CHANNEL WITH VARIABLE PROPAGATION DELAY

PURPOSE: To communicate real time data through a channel imposing the delay of a variable period on a propagating signal. CONSTITUTION: A channel 26 is established between a satellite moving at a high speed on an orbit around the earth and a subscriber's unit arranged in the neighborhood of a ground. Read time data are synchronously generated by a TDM frame established by the satellite and the subscriber's unit. The data are delayed by a variable delay circuit 68 before being transmitted through the channel 26. The period of delay imposed by the delay circuit 68 is changed according to timing data received by the satellite. The timing data describes the changing propagation delay of the channel 26 and the changing definition of a TDM time slot. The data received by the subscriber's unit are delayed by another variable delay circuit 76. Both the gradual and rapid timing characteristics of the channel 26 are absorbed by variable timing circuits 68 and 76.
