PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device based on a novel driving principle by changing the orientation state of liquid crystal in accordance with the polarization state of a ferroelectric substance. CONSTITUTION:In the initial state where no voltage is impressed a ferroelectric substance 2 is spontaneously polarized approximately vertically to the surface of the substance 2, and consequently, liquid crystal molecules 1 are oriented approximately vertically to the surface of the substance 2 (homeotropic orientation). When a switch 5 is closed to impress voltages to electrodes 3a and 3b, the direction of polarization is parallel with the surface of the substance 2, and liquid crystal molecules 1 are oriented in parallel with the surface of the substance 2 similarly. If the ferroelectric substance 2 is sufficiently thick, they are restored to original states when the switch 5 is opened. Consequently, if a bicolor dye is mixed with liquid crystal molecules 1 to set the guest host mode, the first color is seen in the initial state, and the second color is seen in the state where the switch 5 is closed. |
