PURPOSE:To safely obtain a monoalkenylbenzene in high yield at a low cost by side chain alkenylation, with a 4-5C conjugated diene, of an aromatic hydrocarbon deaerated and dehydrated by distillation, in the presence of a catalyst, a combination of an alkali metal compound and an alkali metal. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, an aromatic hydrocarbon to be used is deaerated and dehydrated, in advance, by distillation. Secondly, the resultant aromatic hydrocarbon with the alpha-site of its side chain having at least one hydrogen atom is reacted with a 4-5C conjugated diene in the presence of a catalyst, a combination of an alkali metal and an alkali metal compound to produce a monoalkenylbenzene. It is recommended that the aromatic hydrocarbon be distilled and the resultant bottoms used as the raw material. Especially, it is preferable that, by the above distillation, the oxygen level and moisture level of the hydrocarbon be brought to <=1ppm and <=5ppm, respectively. Use of this raw material does not impair the catalyst, having highly great effects in terms of the reduction in the amount of the catalyst to be used and the improvement in the service life of the catalyst. |
