PURPOSE:To provide a bismuth-substituted rare earth element iron garnet single crystal having a saturated magnetic field of <=800 (Oe), and to provide a Faraday rotator composed from this bismuth-substituted rare earth element iron garnet single crystal and used for light isolators. CONSTITUTION:This bismuth-substituted rare earth element iron garnet single crystal comprises a single crystal film represented by a general formula, TbxLuyBi3-x-yFe5-zAlzO12 (wherein 0.09<=y/x<=0.23, 1.40<=x+y<=1.70, 0.20<=z<=0.38) and grown on a non-magnetic garnet substrate, (CaGd)3(MgZrGa)5 O12 having a lattice constant of 12.490Angstrom -12.500Angstrom by a liquid phase epitaxial method. The bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet single crystal which is used for light isolators, reduced in the degree of the lowering of the Faraday effect in spite of the lowering of the saturated magnetic field in comparison with conventional ones, and not inferior in the temperature characteristic of the Faraday effect can thereby profitably be produced and provided. |
