PURPOSE:To provide a lighting device for starting a discharge lamp by low voltage from several hundred V to about 1000V without using high voltage impulse from several kV to several tens kV. CONSTITUTION:When a discharge lamp 1 is started, a switch 501 is closed to actuate a secondary opening voltage rise circuit 5, and DC voltage of, for instance, 800V is generated and supplied to an inverter 2. In the inverter 2, this DC voltage is converted into, for instance, 100Hz rectangular wave AC voltage or left as DC voltage, and applied to the discharge lamp. Thus, the discharge lamp is lighted. When the discharge lamp is lighted, the switch 501 is opened to stop the secondary opening voltage rise circuit 5. Simultaneously with supplying DC voltage, for instance, 280V, generated by a rectifier circuit 4 and a chopper circuit 3, to the inverter 2, the discharge lamp 1 is steadily driven by AC voltage of 280V output from the inverter 2. |
