Before the inlet to the double face machine (6), with entry of covering paper (7), the sheet is held by compressed air nozzles (8). A retractable tool (10) moved by the operator cuts the front edge of the sheet in two. The tool is carried on a cutting carriage (9) which displaces transversely at constant speed. The cutting tool penetrates into the sheet of cardboard at a distance E from the sheet edge. Simultaneously the cutting carriage is transversely displaced. The shredded cardboard measurement system (5) counts with a coder (13). When the cutting tool is at the distance E from the other end of the cardboard sheet, the cutting carriage is stopped and the cutting tool continues to cut the cardboard in the direction of shredding of the sheet. When the side L, evaluated by the measuring system has been obtained, the cutting carriage returns its travel and the cutting tool ends cutting the sheet.
